【Four major themes 】

  • Unique charm: The murals and colored sculptures of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang are famous for their smooth lines, bright colors and smart shapes. As the intersection of four major civilizations, Dunhuang art integrates the Central Plains Han culture, Buddhist art, Persian and Central Asian elements, forming a unique aesthetic style that embodies the spirit of openness and tolerance.
  • Auspicious beasts: In the murals of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, auspicious beasts are often seen in Buddhist stories and scenes of the paradise, representing auspiciousness, power and holiness. Common images include: dragons, phoenixes, unicorns, white elephants or lions.
  • Exquisite caisson: It is an important element in the architecture and art of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. It refers to the decorative structure on the top of the cave, which usually shows the unique charm of Buddhist art with exquisite patterns and colors. It is commonly found in palaces, temples and other places. In Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, caisson is located on the top of the cave, simulating the sky or the universe, and is decorated with geometric patterns, flowers, flying celestial beings, auspicious beasts (such as dragons and phoenixes), etc., to create a sacred atmosphere.
  • Flying Apsaras: Flying Apsaras are a classic image in the murals of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. They represent the gods flying freely in the sky in Buddhist art and often appear in Buddhist stories and scenes of the Pure Land.
